Rock City Morgue, The Cat’s Meow (Independent)

I admire bands that have a clear vision of what’s happening in their careers because I run into so many that don’t. Singer Rik Slave says Rock City Morgue made a vinyl EP because their fans have turntables. Rock City Morgue isn’t trying to make a grand statement with this release; it’s putting out some music for fans of his since the days of the Phantoms and Man Scouts of America, and of Sean Yseult’s since her days with White Zombie.

That practicality shows up in the music. It sounds like a band pleasing itself first, whether by playing old school punk rock that’s hard more than fast, or by indulging Slave’s fascination with cabaret Nick Cave and Yseult’s return to the piano. On one hand, it’s very commercial music—including a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Angie” that works better than you might expect—but it comes from personal places. The results are, appropriately, solidly fun. They don’t test their reach or go for anything revolutionary, but there’s no reason for them to.
