Tarbox Ramblers, Tarbox Ramblers (Rounder)

Sometimes the best way old music endures is when its presenters play it with such freshness that they appear to be the music’s originators. Such is the case with Boston cult revivalists Tarbox Ramblers who are led by fuzzed-tone, slide guitarist Michael Tarbox and his scruffy line-up of fiddle, doghouse bass and loosely hacked drums. The Ramblers keep one foot in 21st century while the other never ventures out of their gritty pre-World War II mix of hillbilly, blues, swing, field hollers and gospel tunes that are mostly public domain obscurities. In drawing from such eclectic sources, they render these songs as their own. From the Memphis Jug Band, there’s a stomp through “Jug Band Music;” on the country side, they euphorically whirl their way on “Columbus Stockade.” There’s a dark and broody touch on “Oh Death” while their blues tunes “Down South Blues” and “The Cuckoo “ are more like a hip Clarksdale (MS) garage band. Their gospel fits into their earthy ideology, it’s real and like most of this, suitable for a mindless boogie or two. If their debut is any indication, expect more cool stuff from these guys.
