The Creole Zydeco Farmers, One More Time (J&S Records)

If you caught the Creole Zydeco Farmers throwin’ it down at Jazz Fest, you’ve probably got wind that they’re simply a smokin’ live band. While their sixth overall release may not break any new ground, it does find them holding their own in their delectable rough-and-tumble style.

The Crole Zydeco Farmers, One More Time, album coverWith 14 tracks of crystal clear studio production, the Farmers never fail to lock in satisfying dance grooves while staying entertaining in the process. Yet, unlike a lot of z-bands that favor the single accordionist frontman set-up, the Farmers are unique with their dual-accordionist attack that alternates styles and personalities.

Diatonic accordion pumper Warren Prejean sings in a raspy, squeaky voice that gives the line dance-tempoed “Booty Scoop,” producer Jay Doucet’s finger-snappin’ “Pay My Bills” and Fats Domino’s gusty “Let The Four Winds Blow” their own sense of country charm. Better yet are Prejean’s tornado twistin’ originals “Louisiana Boy” and “Foot Stompin’ Zydeco” that rank among the disc’s best energy.

The band’s higher altitude accordionist, Morris Francis, plays the piano variety for an old school flavor on a few belly rubbin’ bluesy benders (“Too Many Irons,” “Have You Ever Been Mistreated”) that settle into a decent groove. Though Francis may occasionally have the blues, he can sure bulldoze a boogie as heard on beat happy “Good Times” and “You Got The Power” (to zydeco). The tune “USA” doesn’t exactly exude patriotism—this “USA” refers to the casino-bound bus lines. With uncomplicated themes ranging from air-conditioned buses to paying stacks of bills “because nobody else will,” don’t expect any Bob Dylan lyrical profundity here. Still, it gets the job done and the Farmers aren’t lacking for any seeds or fertilizer either.
