The Neville Brothers, Valence Street (Columbia)

The Brothers’ latest release displays their ever-expanding diversity. If you’re strictly expecting a large serving of the traditional Neville band sound and Aaron’s “Nevillesque” crooning, you might be just a little disappointed.

In addition to what locals identify as the traditional Neville sound, the disc serves up a platter of jazz on the instrumental title cut, as well as a classic R&B sound on “Utterly Beloved” and “Until We Meet Again,” a serving of “Real Funk,” love ballads sung by both Aaron and Art, and even a touch of tap by Wyclef Jean.

In one cut, you’re whisked off to Africa, and to a tropical rain forest in another.
