Truckstop Honeymoon, Christmas In Ocala (Squirrel Records)

By now ya’d think the honeymoon would be over, especially one christened in a stinky truck stop along I-10. But for Mike West and Katie Euliss, the married couple’s musical partnership has logged many a mile since their experimental debut rev-up that’s barely a year old.

Truckstop Honeymoon, Chistmas in Ocala, album coverSo many miles, in fact, that this rig easily passes all mileage checks with a cargo of forward-looking tunes rife with irony, intrigue and wackiness. Regardless of their songs’ twisted, humorous nature, a few will make you cringe like the cancer alley protagonist (“Down Wind From the Refinery”) who says life’s great despite the prognosis.

Others, like the ex-con yearning for the simpler life inside, are developed enough to see an alternative viewpoint. Similarly, “Mama’s Moving Back” deals with how the ’hood has more life going on than its sterile suburb counterparts.

It’s a wonderful collaborative effort between West and the Appalachian-achey Euliss who pluck, strike, rap and tinkle more than a dozen instruments between them. When it comes to honeymoons, this one keeps on truckin’.
