Various Artists, Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler: Volume I (Acadiana Records)

These days it seems like Cajun compilations are a bumper crop; every label’s got ’em. Same artists, different tracks, not a lot of newness if ya own a few, which is a problem in that there’s always more to the scene than meets the eye. Such is not the case with this 18-track compilation recorded at Eunice’s Acadiana Sounds Recording Studio. Some of the artists like Robert Jardell, Donald Thibodeaux and Kevin Naquin may be familiar to Cajun music devotees while others represent the vastness of the French prairie scene. In the latter, there’s the talented brother-sister team of Moise and Alida Viator, the easy-going boogey of Ricky Dodd’s Simply Cajun, and the never lack luster Terry Cormier and Junior Melancon with their respective bands. Yet, what’s remarkable about this unassuming collection is the variety of sounds, tempos and material. Fiddle rides, steel guitar strides, and hell-bent accordion tears—each track is its own entity as the feel varies from tune to tune. If Cajun music sounds unconvincingly all the same, then this collection is a must. Better yet, it’s a great excuse for another dance.
