Zydeco Force, You Mean the World to Me (Maison de Soul Records)

Last year Zydeco Force pleasantly stunned z-zealots everywhere by reuniting after a five-year hiatus. With a new recording in hand and a packed booking schedule, the Force soon vaulted back into the middle of the pack, which wasn’t a bad way to stage a comeback. A year-and-half and a tighter follow-up release later, the Force again shows why the Force is with ’em—this time mustering enough energy to overload a nuclear power plant. Beginning with the slamming tempo on “101 Proof Zydeco,” the Force pumps out exhilarating dance music that’s not only ideal for sure-footed humans but greyhounds and thoroughbreds as well.

While other frenzy-whipping songs (“Zydeco From 1988,” “Flash Back”) may be equally punishing, it’s not about relentless macho playing. Rather everything here centers around passing a good time and your jovial hosts do cut it up along the way. They playfully chide each other about their faux pas (“Stupid Little Things”), only to follow up with such spirited songs as “Bow Legged Woman” and “Louisiana Bow Hog” that features a symphony of snorts instead of the usual barking dogs sound effects. And speaking of bow wows, “Bad Ass Dog” offers a novel twist on the proverbial zydeco dog theme. This “bad ass dog” is the two-legged variety that prevents the amorous protagonist from inching closer to his coveted love, hence only augmenting his frustration. “Do The Mose and The Amedee” is the band’s tip of the hat to a couple of fun-loving devotees who dance quite individualistically.

Indeed there is something here for everyone. They touch hearts with Percy Sledge’s ballad, “Take Time To Know Her,” and pay homage to the kings of zydeco with an old school waltz. Accordionist Jeffery Broussard puts on a clinic with his knockout triple-row stylings on “Show Off” and “Japanese Zydeco” while his gruffish vocals are noticeably smoothing out. Don’t look now but with

Zydeco Force in the house, the dance floor rents have just gone up. And they’re not dropping anytime soon either.
