224 Louisiana Musicians Owed Royalties: Are You One?

Attention Louisiana musicians: OffBeat has been informed that 224 of you are owed royalties for digital plays of your music, with the total amount of money owed reaching over $60,000. By matching information on musicians and bands from our Louisiana Music Directory with a list of outstanding royalties from SoundExchange, the nonprofit performance rights organization, OffBeat is providing a list of artists and their representatives that are owed money, all of whom are printed below. If you’re a Louisiana musician who has recorded music, check the list below to see if you’re owed royalties.

Similar to ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, SoundExchange collects royalties for songwriters and publishers for their musical compositions, however SoundExchange is the only organization in the United States that is authorized to collect royalties for the performance of a sound recording as well, on behalf of the performers and rights owners of the recording. They collect a royalty any time a song is played on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio, Internet radio (Pandora, Yahoo, Live 365.com, AOL, etc.), or on digital cable and satellite TV services (e.g. Comcast’s “Music Choice”, DirecTV, etc.). Since 2001, SoundExchange has collected and processed billions of plays, and has paid out more than $600 million in digital royalties.

To receive payment, artists and labels just have to register with SoundExchange. The registration is completely free. Once registered, rights-holders receive royalty payments quarterly, every time they’re owed.

You can register online, or you can use hard copy registration forms by going to SoundExchange.com, clicking “I’m a recording artist or artist representative”, and then downloading “Artist Group Registration Bundle 1” (or 2 if you are outside the US). After printing and filling out the forms, the rights holders can mail, fax or scan/email them back to SoundExchange. For any questions, call 202-524-7839 or email [email protected].
