Big Freedia To Serve As Dancing Grounds Showdown Judge

Dancing Grounds’ Showdown is a dance competition which serves as a dual fundraiser and talent show. This year, dancers representing a vast collection of styles will leave everything they’ve got on stages as they perform dances in a variety of genres, from hip-hop to salsa and many nuanced forms in between.

This year, however, there will be something extra special about the Dancing Grounds Showdown.

Big Freedia, a key figure in the world of performative twerking and bounce music, will join the Showdown as a celebrity judge. According to Dancing Grounds organizers, Freedia will choose “which of the city’s best dancers shake, shimmy and sway their way to a first place title and cash prizes.”

The Dancing Grounds Showdown takes place in October at the Civic Theatre but first, dancers must submit a one-minute audition video by 11:59 p.m. local time on July 20. All ages and styles are accepted. Of the dancers in those videos, 20 will be selected as semi-finalists, in August. Nine of them will perform live on October 13’s showdown. Each finalist is guaranteed to win cash prizes.

Of the funds raised from the DG Showdown, Dancing Grounds will give back a total of $7,000 in cash prizes to finalists as an investment in the local dance community.

The DG Showdown is sponsored by Red Bull, Blue Cross Blue Shield Louisiana, and Benefits Administration Group.
