Terence Blanchard hosts Michael Murphy's "Up From the Streets," which opens the DC Independent Film Festival on March 4

NOLA music doc ‘Up From the Streets’ to open DC Independent Film Festival

New Orleans documentary Up From the Streets, directed by Michael Murphy, has been selected  as the opening night gala event for the DC Independent Film Fest in Washington, DC. The opening night event will screen the documentary as well as feature a performance from the Dr. Michael White Quartet, a Q&A with the director, and an after party.

Up From the Streets is a documentary that highlights the deep musical roots of New Orleans and how the music influences music around the world.  Oscar-nominated and six-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard hosts the film, exploring different elements of New Orleans music, from pre-colonial Native American rhythms to jazz, funk, and modern bounce. The film features biographies of legendary New Orleans musicians like Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, and more. There is also commentary from today’s New Orleans-based musicians like Harry Connick, Jr., Irma Thomas, and Branford, Jason, and Wynton Marsalis. Engaging performances by Terence Blanchard with Quiana Lynell, a duet with Aaron and Ivan Neville, and old performance footage, also shine in the film.

Director Michael Murphy sought to create a film that truly showcases the significance and special-ness of New Orleans music and culture. On a more personal level, Murphy wanted to show the diverse, moving musical history of his hometown. In his statement to the DC Independent Film Festival, Murphy states “New Orleans is my hometown and the music here has been a vital source of inspiration for myself and the citizens of this amazing city. Our music unites us, providing a deep spiritual connection to the city’s rich multi-cultural foundation that began 300 years ago.”

Up From the Streets  will screen at the DC Independent Film Fest Opening Night Gala on Wednesday, March 4 at 7:15 pm. The event is held at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, DC. Tickets are available for $11 or $7 for students in advance here and will also be available at the door.
