Deepwater Horizon Film Gets First Trailer

Deepwater Horizon, the forthcoming major motion picture about the industrial accident/explosion that led to the 2010 BP oil spill, now has its first trailer. The film, which stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Hudeon, Kurt Russell and John Malkovich, was directed by Peter Berg.

Berg worked with Wahlberg on 2013’s Lone Survivor, an Afghanistan War drama that shied away from any political statements in favor of a run-of-the-mill action flick story. If the trailer for Deepwater Horizon is any indication, it looks like Berg will keep that trend alive with a film that shies away from any political statements in favor of a run-of-the-mill disaster movie story.

As many of our readers know, the BP oil spill discharged an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of three months, making it the largest accidental marine oil spill in human history. Most of the oil was eventually cleaned from the water’s surface, but effects from the sunken oil and the toxic dispersants that were used to push that oil to the ocean floor linger to this day.

Deepwater Horizon began shooting in New Orleans last April, and is currently slated for release on September 30.
