Dolores Marsalis, matriarch of New Orleans’ first family of jazz, has died

Dolores Ferdinand Marsalis, mother of the Marsalis brothers, has passed away. NOLA.com reports that she died on Tuesday of pancreatic cancer. She was 80 years old.

Marsalis was born in New Orleans and attended St. Mary’s Academy and Grambling State University. She met legendary New Orleans pianist Ellis Marsalis in 1956, and the pair were married in 1959.

Dolores and Ellis raised six sons, Branford, Wynton, Ellis III, Delfeayo, Mboya Kinyatta and Jason. Four of them–Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason—went on to become prominent international jazz artists in their own rights.

Arrangements for a memorial at rhodes Funeral Home are currently in the works, but the details have not yet been revealed.
