The Detour outing finds Costello, who headlined the Gentily Stage at Jazz Fest a few weeks ago, playing choice cuts from throughout his career with just a piano and a guitar. Backing bands are not a part of the equation, though he does perform in front of a giant television set projecting family photos, mottos, mysteries and other mischief.

We had a chat with Costello ahead of Jazz Fest to discuss the legacy of Allen Toussaint, who collaborated with the rocker on the masterful 2006 album The River in Reverse. In his 2015 memoir, Costello echoed countless New Orleanians when he called Toussaint “one of America’s greatest philosophers and musicians.”

Tickets for Costello’s upcoming concert at the Saenger Theatre will go on sale at noon on Friday, June 17 via Ticketmaster.
