Friday the 13th Events you won’t want to miss

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. According to CNN who says the date is “unlucky,” it occurs when the 13th day of the month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday, which happens at least once every year but can occur up to three times in the same year. Don’t have an unlucky Friday the 13th at home. Instead, opt for some of these OffBeat handpicked gems to stave off misfortune.

The Human Horses Fundraiser will take place tonight, Friday, Oct. 13 at 8 p.m. at 740 Burgundy Street. This event exists to raise money and awareness for local animal shelters and charities and to promote cruelty-free experiences. Admission is $20 at the door and there will be prizes and much more. Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will continue to perform the score to the ground-breaking 2017 psychological horror film, Get Out, directed by Jordan Peele (Key and Peele, Us). Michael Abel’s award-winning score will be performed live by the LPO accompanied by a screening of the thriller which stars Daniel Kaluuya (“Sicario,” “Black Panther”) and Allison Williams (HBO’s “Girls”). The R-rated film tells the tale of a young Black man visiting his white girlfriend’s parents for the weekend where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point. Scandinavian plays and writings are all the rage this season as a Norwegian author, Jon Fosse, just took home the Nobel Prize in Literature. Written by Jack Thorne, based on the novel by Swede John Ajvide Lindqvist, Let the Right One In is an enchanting, brutal vampire myth and coming-of-age love story adapted from the best-selling novel and award-winning film. Content Notice: This production contains stage combat, depictions of murder, and partial nudity. Recommended for ages 13+. Today is Friday the 13th and this event may be a week away but don’t forget if you like LabyrinthThe Dark Crystal, and Wonder Showzen you are invited join Poose the Puppet (recently seen on NBC) and Nightshade/White Knives  (seen on Adult Swim) with special guests opening up for them nightly performing puppet techno, rap, experimental, and doom music with the help of puppetry arts. This will be an experimental amalgamation of shadow and hand puppets with other bands performing. Nightshade/White Knives is a shadow puppet punk band and Choose Helth is puppet techno. Rapper Michael Myerz joins the lineup from Atlanta with Break Fast Puppets, an experimental group that talks Terrence McKenna and DMT. My Cousin Christina will be performing doom metal and grunge Saturday night with a side of Charli XCX. All of the performers are lovers of the dark side and puppetry arts — join Poose & Friends at the Mudlark Theater nightly for an experience that will surely take you away.
