George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic to return for Fillmore NOLA show

After the band’s final New Year’s Eve performance in New Orleans, George Clinton is returning with Parliament Funkadelic for a performance at the Fillmore on September 1. They’ll be joined on the bill by Dumpstaphunk, George Porter Jr., Miss Velvet & the Blue Wolf.

While living in New Jersey in the early ’50s, George Clinton was intrigued by the sounds of doo wop. With a style based on Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, Parliament was formed in 1955, but in 1968, when Parliament’s Detroit-based record label fell on hard times, the band started recording the same music under the name Funkadelic, with only Parliament’s backings listed. During the 70s, while performing as both Parliament and Funkadelic, Clinton mixed soul and funk with a sound inspired by other late-60s artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and Sly Stone.

Though Clinton no longer wears the neon dreads of past years, the look of his shows is no less surreal, with Clinton often donning bodacious spectacles and sparkling suits. The group’s latest album, Medicaid Fraud Dogg, which was released in 2018, was Parliament’s first album release in 38 years. “The whole thing is about Medicaid, insurance, Obamacare. It’s about the real Medicaid fraud, which is the big pharmaceutical companies,” said Clinton in an interview with OffBeat in 2017.

“Funk is an international language,” Clinton said, when asked about the popularity of the genre. “Everybody can speak it. It’s an interplanetary language!” If funk is an international language, it’s clear from Clinton’s lifetime of performing that he’s more than fluent.

Tickets for the event start at $68.50, capping at $90.50. The Fillmore is located at 6 Canal St., on the second floor of Harrah’s. The show is an all ages event, and doors open at 7 p.m. For more information about where to buy tickets, click here
