Jazz & Heritage Foundation to Host Music School Auditions This Weekend

Auditions for the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s free music school will take place this Saturday, January 9 at the new George & Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center on Rampart Street.

The auditions, which are for the Spring 2016 semester, will begin at 10a.m. They will be open to beginner and advanced students ages 10-17 from throughout the greater New Orleans area.

The foundation will host auditions for three separate programs: the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School of Music,  the new Jazz & Heritage Brass Band and the new Jazz & Heritage A Capella Choir.

Founded in 1990, the Don “Moose” Jamison Heritage School is music is the foundation’s primary music program. It provides instruction in brass, woodwinds, piano, bass, drums, guitar and voice. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10a.m. to 1p.m. and Thursdays from 5p.m. to 7p.m.

The Jazz & Heritage Brass Band is a new initiative that will create a New Orleans-style brass band composed of intermediate and advanced young musicians. Classes will meet on Saturday mornings.

The new Jazz & Heritage A Capella Choir will be a showcase for more advanced vocal students, with classes meeting on Saturday mornings and Thursday afternoons.

All students must own their instruments and (except for piano drums) bring them to their audition. However, drummers are asked to bring their own drum sticks
