John “Papa” Gros, the respected keyboardist, vocalist and bandleader in the local music scene, felt a deep connection to Dr. John, whom he considered a mentor and an inspiration. Gros decided to pay tribute to The Nite Tripper by assembling a talented group of musicians the this tribute. “My goal is to honor his music faithfully, and it seems fitting to do so around his birthday, November 20,” Gros mentioned, emphasizing his commitment to preserving Dr. John’s musical legacy.

John Gros has prior experience honoring Dr. John’s music, having participated in the 2014 tribute concert “The Music Mojo of Dr. John,” which resulted in a live album featuring various artists. Gros also played a significant role in the memorial event for Dr. John after his passing and was a featured performer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival’s official tribute concert in 2022.

For this tribute, Gros has carefully assembled a group of skilled musicians, including a horn section and female background vocalists, to faithfully interpret Dr. John’s music. Joining them are musicians who collaborated extensively with Dr. John, such as Leo Nocentelli, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, David Barard and John Fohl from The Lower 911 and Kiki Chapman and Yolanda Robinson. Together, they will celebrate Dr. John’s extensive musical catalog, encompassing well-known songs and lesser-known tracks.
