KERMIT IN THE PARK, AND ON THE TUBE

If you can’t get enough Kermit Ruffins, tonight you can catch him both live and on TV. Only catch is that they’re both happening at the same time, so use your TiVO wisely.

Ruffins and his Barbeque Swingers are playing tonight at Louis Armstrong Park during the “Jazz in the Park” series. His fairgrounds show last weekend was typical of his Fest-week shows, containing even more of a street-party vibe than usual; and you can expect more of the same tonight. Opening the show will be the Brass-a-Holics, whose hot debut CD (produced by Irvin Mayfield) stands to make them a pretty big deal. They’re due to start playing at 5pm; Kermit and company shout hit the stage at 6:30.

Meanwhile on the tube, WYES, Channel 12 will have the debut of a short film by Bryan Myers, “Eat to the Beat: Kermit Ruffins’ New Orleans.” Kermit talks about his ritual of cooking and serving food before gigs, reflects on the relation between New Orleans music and cuisine, and plays some tunes with the band at Vaughan’s Lounge. It shows tonight at 7pm but if you won’t be home between now and then, it shows again this Sunday, May 5 at 7:00 PM and Thursday, May 30 at 8:00 PM.
