New Orleans author Michael Allen Zell returns with Rebel Soul, the third and final installment in his Maya Gaines trilogy, closing a crime saga rooted in vengeance, survival and the city’s enduring codes of loyalty and justice.
Following The Last Shadow and Black Ice, Rebel Soul finds protagonist Maya regrouping in the woods at the southern edge of New Orleans before reemerging with a singular goal: revenge against the Mafia. The series has been described as Creed meets Kill Bill, channeling a relentless heroine navigating violence, trauma, and self-determination in a modern-day New Orleans setting.
Zell’s trilogy traces Maya’s evolution into a warrior shaped by loss and circumstance, exploring themes of family—both inherited and chosen—alongside vengeance, resilience, and the weight of the past. The final chapter leans fully into those tensions, asking how far one will go to reclaim power and avenge what’s been taken.
The novel opens with a meditation on what Zell frames as a distinctly New Orleans ethos: “Even a kid barely brought up in a shabby home on a bloody block in the sinking city knew… the third act is where you get your lick back… The New Orleans code. Messy. Tradition. Been that way.”
Beyond its noir sensibilities, Rebel Soul engages with real-world inequities shaping life in New Orleans. In an author statement, Zell positions Maya’s fight against organized crime as both personal and symbolic, pointing to systemic poverty and generational trauma affecting the city’s youth. According to data from the Data Center, a significant percentage of Black children in New Orleans live below the poverty line, contributing to cycles of instability and survival-driven decision-making.
Zell, a novelist, screenwriter, journalist, and playwright based in New Orleans, is also known for his Bobby Delery crime series, centered on a Tulane University criminology professor drawn into the city’s underworld. His work has been praised for its sharp ear for dialogue and deep sense of place, with critics noting his ability to capture both the humor and darkness embedded in New Orleans life.
With Rebel Soul, Zell brings the Maya Gaines trilogy to a close in a story that is as much about reckoning as it is about revenge—grounded in a city where history, violence, and resilience are never far apart.
