New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to Hold Auditions for New Big Band

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will be holding auditions for the Jazz & Heritage Big Band, the foundation’s new music education program, on Saturday, October 24th at 2 p.m. at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center.

The auditions are open to intermediate and advanced players between the ages of 10 and 18 who are interested in learning and performing jazz, swing and other styles of music for large ensembles.

The foundation will audition for brass, woodwinds, bass, drums, guitar, piano, voice. Participants will be expected to play major and minor scales in several keys, perform a piece of music music that they are familiar with, read sheet music for and play a piece of music they are not familiar with and more.

New Orleans saxophonist Derek Douget, who also coordinates the Heritage School of Music, will serve as instructor and leader for the new big band. Rehearsals are set to take place on Saturday afternoons starting at 2:30 p.m.

Participation in the program is free. The George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center is located at 1225 N. Rampart Street.
