New Orleans Musicians Sign Apple Music Petition

New Orleans musicians have taken to Facebook to share a MoveOn.org petition demanding Apple Music show full album credits.

The petition, which will be delivered to Apple CEO Tim Cook, was created by Jon Burr and has accrued over 34,000 signatures so far.

Among a scattering of other local musicians, Galactic drummer Stanton Moore shared the petition on Facebook July 8, accompanied by a short message: “Please sign this petition to let Apple know we want to see album credits on the music we buy and stream.”

The main issue with Apple’s new streaming venture is the lack of full credits when songs are selected and played through the service.

“Showing the headline artist and track title only anonymizes and minimizes the contributions of all the others involved and forecloses opportunity,” the main text of the petition reads. “Please show the credits when music is played!”

Another section drives home the point in an even more forceful manner:

“We want to know who’s playing the music we’re hearing, who produced it, who arranged it, where it was recorded and by whom. When this information is withheld, our identity has been stolen.”

This isn’t the first time local musicians have criticized Apple Music. John “Papa” Gros took to Facebook just after Taylor Swift wrote an open letter to Cook demanding compensation for all music streamed during Apple Music’s free three month trial period.

The stated goal of the effort is 40,000 signatures.
