Photos: Sinkhole De Mayo, A New Celebration

What started as a joke among a small group of friends flavored with a clever pun blew out of proportions when a ‘Sinkhole De Mayo’ event launched on Facebook became a city-wide sensation on Thursday, May 5.

The crowd took the dual subject to heart, showing off costumes marrying Mexican extravaganza and construction-themed accessories, in reference to the collapsing of a a 30-foot-wide section of Canal Street near Harrah’s Casino last Friday.
