The Low End Theory Players, a local music collective revolving around the music of A Tribe Called Quest, hosted a show in tribute to the classic hip-hop band at Tipitina’s on Friday, February 27.

After an opening act from Keng & the Pantheon of Funk and a DJ set from Jermaine Quiz, the musicians from Gravity A joined Quiz to bring the legendary Tribe grooves with their live funk flavor. Derrick Freeman a.k.a Mr. Smoker fronted the band, often taking on rhymes from Tribe’s Phife Dawg, while the “abstract original” [Q-Tip] parts were interpreted by Mattew Zarba a.k.a M@ Peoples.

Sean C, MC Koan, guest vocalist Robin Barnes and more MCs also shared the stage as the band ran through classic tracks like “Award Tour,” “Check The Rhime,” “Electric Relaxation,” “Clap Your Hands,” “Oh My God,” and many more—obviously topped with a healthy dose of “Can I Kick It?”
