‘Reefer Madness: The Musical’ Comes to New Orleans

The 1936 film Reefer Madness has always gotten more love from pot smokers than drug warriors. In fact, the anti-marijuana classic’s popularity peaked in the 1970s—nearly 40 years after its release—when its preposterous plot and campy production made it the perfect fodder for hazy midnight movie screenings.

54fc850f01692c3967fafe01c44d7b2dSatirizing Reefer Madness is no easy task, as the film handles those duties just fine on its own. Nevertheless, a musical rendition of the movie has been making waves since it opened in Los Angeles in 1998, even getting the small screen treatment from Showtime in 2005. Now it looks like New Orleans will get to experience the madness when the production comes to the city this January and February.

Reefer Madness: The Musical will run at St. Claude Avenue’s Cafe Istanbul from January 12 to 22 before moving to Kenner’s Rivertown Theater from February 2 to 12. Produced by The Storyville Collective, a new Louisiana spin off of Austin’s Doctuh Mistuh Productions, the musical will be directed by Michael McKelvey of Tulane’s Summer Lyric Theatre.

Reefer Madness will feature performances by Eli Timm, Maggie Windler, Janie Heck, Elyse McDaniel, Alex Wallace, Ken Goode, Luke Halpern, Cameron Mitchell Ware, Polanco Jones, Whitney Mixon, Emily Bagwill and Abby Botnick. It will be the inaugural production of The Storyville Collective, which aims to bring edgy off-Broadway musicals and plays to New Orleans.

Tickets for the Cafe Instanbul run are on sale here, while tickets for the Rivertown Theater run are available here. All performances will take place at 7:30pm, with the exception of an 11pm late show on January 20.
