Second Line to Celebrate Prince in New Orleans Today

It was only a matter of time before someone organized a second line in honor of musical pioneer Prince, who passed away at the age of 57 last week. Today’s event may not have the backing of Arcade Fire or the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but you can still count on a sizable turn out for any celebration of The Purple One’s life.

Scheduled for 6pm today (Monday, April 25), the “Purple Rain” second line will get started outside the Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar on Orleans Avenue. The route will stick to the Treme area as the procession heads down N. Prieur, Ursulines and N. Robertson before swinging back to Orleans.

More information can be found via the second line’s Facebook event page.

In related news, Prince was also the subject of many a Jazz Fest tribute over the weekend, most notably from his friend and collaborator Janelle Monae.

UPDATE: Due to a request from PETA, the event will no longer begin with a release of white doves. Instead there will be a pre-second line poem reading by Arsene DeLay at 5:30pm.
