St. Alphonsus hosts concert series of traditional jazz musicians

As part of the fall 2021 season of the Concerts on Constance series, the Friends of St. Alphonsus will collaborate with Liberty Bank New Orleans and the Treme Artists Collective to present four special concerts featuring a few of New Orleans’ finest traditional jazz musicians.

The series will kick off on Wednesday, September 29, at 7 p.m. with Dwayne Burns (trumpet/vocals), Mark “Tuba” Smith (sousaphone/vocals), Glen “Finister” Andrews (drums) and Paul Kemnitz (guitar).

The concert series is intended to introduce audiences to the St. Alphonsus Arts and Cultural Center, housed in a historic church in the Irish Channel, while also bringing attention to the need to restore the frescoes and stained-glass windows that define the former house of worship that was completed in 1857.  The concert series began in the spring of 2021 with the goal of raising funds for the restoration of the center and to provide a safe experience for both perfomers and audience members during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Due to damage suffered during Hurricane Ida, the concerts will be temporarily relocated to St. Mary’s Assumption Church, located nearby at 923 Josephine Street.  All appropriate COVID-19 protocols, as required by the city of New Orleans, will be in place.  All concertgoers will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours in order to attend as well as wear a mask throughout the event.

Future concerts will be held on the following Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m.: October 13, November 10 and December 15. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.  Tickets may be purchased via eventbrite.

Food truck’s from restaurants in Treme will be on location.  Patrons are advised to bring their own beverages.  Merchandise from the Treme Artists Collective and Friends of St. Alphonsus will be also available for purchase.
