Erica Falls & Vintage Soul: Emotions (Independent)

Without a doubt, Erica Falls has the vocal range, modulation and passionate delivery to really belt out a song. Her New Orleans background, that style that leans towards old-school rhythm and blues and soul rather than contemporary, makes her very accessible to wide audiences especially those who enjoy hitting a dance floor.

On Emotions she kicks things off with a slow groove on “Up” that boasts an optimistic attitude. The electronic keyboards supply the orchestral-sounding scenery with the vocal trio of Coty Hunter, Alayna Mayberry and Christen Spencer providing excellent back-up as they do throughout the album. Next up, “Let’s Get Down,” is the fun-loving Falls that folks expect. “Let’s go!” she enthuses.

It’s unfortunate, though understandable, that Falls wrote all of the material (with the exception of one cut) during the COVID pandemic. Several tunes and especially the short, spoken word selections dwell on the topic—even the reggae-tinged “Over It.”

Onward… “Pete’s Tune” is blessed with a lilting vibe—soft and gentle—and offers more space for the organ of Kendrick Marshall and the guitarist (there are three) to stretch a bit. The guitar is back in focus to open “Big,” that stands out for its more stripped-down arrangement. Drummer and co-producer Nick Mercadel works it with the bassist. New Orleans greats Doug Ramsey and George Porter, Jr. both appear on bass on the album. Towards the end, Falls goes for it, Tina Turner style—dig when she’s screaming.

A poppin’ bass opens “Good Time” and it’s easy to imagine a line dancing kicking on this one. “Everybody have a good time,” demands Falls knowing full well that they will.

As in life, Emotions has a tendency to go up and down. Best bet, skip the angst and go for the fun.

Eric Falls & Vintage Soul will have a CD Release Party for Emotions at the newly re-opened Dew Drop Inn on March 8, 2024 at 9 p.m. Here’s Erica & Vntage Soul performing at OffBeat’s 2023 Best of The Beat Awards.
