The Blackfire Revelation, Gold and Guns on 51 (Southern Reconstruction Records)

You might call this pair of locals a power duo—Soundgarden using the White Stripes’ modus operandi, the kind of band that overdubs itself into a garage-metal frenzy. With Hank Haney pounding the drums and John Fields beating the living shit out of everything else, including his own vocal cords, this five-song debut EP is as stark and uncompromising as the B&W fanzine-meets-ransom note cover art. Punching out three angry originals and choice covers of the Troggs’ “I Want You Right Now” and Blue Cheer’s “Second Time Around,” these two unleash a suburban blooze equal parts Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Rollins Band—big, fat, trashy, ever so slightly psychedelic, and more than a little pissed off. You may not understand exactly what Fields is screaming about on tracks like “Preach to the Choir,” but the music leaves little room for doubt. Equally entertaining as the soundtrack for your bad hangover or the wild night before that caused it, Blackfire Revelation proves that New Orleans’ rock renaissance is only a few steps away from completion.
