Vin Bruce, The Essential Collection (Swallow Records)

Go figure this one. Despite the many reissues and “definitive collections” that are flooding the market these days, there has never been one on Louisiana’s Vin Bruce, the Cajun-country crooner from Cut Off. At least until now. These particular sides, 23 all together, were done in the ’60s after Bruce flirted with national stardom as a Columbia recording artist with his ’50s hit “Dans La Louisianne” that was coupled with “Fille De La Ville.” This collection includes those hits as well as Bruce’s “Joile Blonde,” “Brune de la Compagne,” and his first Swallow single, “Delaysay,” a love song by way of France. Here, it’s easy to see why Bruce was known as “King of the Southeast Bayous.” His deep baritone voice is golden, ever so smooth and yet so controlled. The songs are tuneful and sunny, done at a strolling pace supported with his Acadians band that included bassist-producer Leroy Martin, lead-steel guitarist Harry Anselmi and renowned  fiddler Doc Guidry. As old recordings go, the sound quality is remarkably clear so expect a second life of these classics sung by this Louisiana legend. He still rules.
