Dew Drop Inn, Fess’ House on Endangered List

Friday night, the Louisiana Landmark Society named its Endangered Nine for 2010, and on the list are Professor Longhair’s home and the Dew Drop Inn. Both buildings are in serious states of disrepair; in fact, the society considers Longhair’s house at 1740 Terpsichore St. uninhabitable. The Dew Drop Inn is still owned by the grandson of the nightclub’s founder Frank Painia, and recently it has looked like some work is being done at its location at 2836 LaSale Ave.

Also on the list is Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, which has been ill-treated by time, inconsistent groundskeeping and careless film crews. The rest of this year’s list includes:

A number of abandoned and decommissioned churches and places of worship including Felicity Street Methodist and Fellowship Missionary Baptist churches, Chevra Thilim Synagogue in Broadmoor, and St. Maurice Catholic Church.

A bracketed house at 3623 Camp St., an example of the bracketed style of shotgun architecture.

The former police station at 2552 St. Philip St. because its Queen Anne-style archtecture.

The General Laundry, Cleaners and Dyers Building at 2512 St. Peter St. for its art deco design.

The Mid-City Historic District, which is threatened by the plans for new Charity Hospital complex.

The Audubon Park tennis courts, which were built in 1949 between Tchoupitoulas Street and the river.
