Tragos Amargos, a new hi-fi listening bar, has opened inside Taquerías Carnalito in downtown New Orleans, blending vinyl culture, agave-forward cocktails, and a chef-driven menu into one immersive late-night experience.
Located at 930 Poydras St., Suite 100, the venue officially opened May 8 as an intimate 60-seat concept centered around one guiding philosophy: music is not background noise — it is the centerpiece of the room.
Created by restaurateurs Danny Cruz and Vilexys Cruz, the space combines low lighting, warm interiors, and a high-fidelity sound system designed specifically for deep listening. Vinyl records shape the atmosphere nightly, with selections spanning 1960s soul, regional Mexican music, and contemporary Latin sounds.
The name “Tragos Amargos,” which translates to “bitter drinks,” references the classic song by Ramón Ayala, a staple of Mexican music culture associated with heartbreak, late nights, and emotional honesty.
The concept is built around three principles: “Raíz” (origin), “Amargo” (tension), and “Memoria” (memory), themes that carry through the cocktail menu, music programming, and overall atmosphere.
The cocktail program, created by Ivan Castillo, pairs drinks with songs intended to complement each other emotionally and sonically. Agave spirits and bitter-forward profiles anchor much of the menu, while softer fruit-driven cocktails round out the offerings.
In the kitchen, Chef Christian Moreno and Johan Pereira combine Mexican culinary traditions with Louisiana influences and Japanese precision. Signature dishes include an Oxtail Tetela with Black Mole, Louisiana Crab Croquettes, Hamachi Tiradito, and an Alligator Hot Dog topped with serrano-jalapeño chile jam and garlic-Dijon aïoli.
Desserts include a Carajillo-inspired Crema Catalana and Greek yogurt ice cream finished with black truffle honey and edible gold.
Tragos Amargos is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. The bar is closed Tuesdays.
