The New York-based band Red Baraat brought their brass-heavy, culture-mashing groove to Tipitina’s on Friday, October 16th. The New Orleans brass band Soul Brass Band opened the night as Kate Gegenheimer photographed the event.

Soul Brass Band, combining the sounds of trumpeters Shamarr Allen and Antonio Gambrell, Stephen Walker’s trombone and Calvin Johnson‘s saxophone backed by Derrick Freeman‘s snare, Aron Lambert on bass drum and Jon Gross on sousaphone, ended their set with a second line through the Tip’s crowd to the ever-so familiar emblem”When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Red Baraat, led by dhol player Sunny Jain, completed their show of Eastern sounds and rhythms combined with the funk and jazz idioms, during which they were joined on stage by members of the Soul Brass Band for a few numbers.
